Renowned Ghanaian economist and former Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Prof Stephen Adei, has lauded President John Mahama’s efforts in his first 120 days but has voiced grave concern over what he described as a calculated undermining of Ghana’s judiciary.
Today marks the end of President Mahama’s 120-day social contract after he assumed office on January 7, 2025.
Speaking on the JoyNews News Desk on Wednesday, May 7, Prof Adei acknowledged the progress made by President Mahama in his first 120 days in office.
“I think John has done very well in his first 120 days,” he noted.
However, he quickly cautioned that beneath the achievements lie “serious dangers” that could have long-term consequences for the nation’s democratic institutions.
Chief among his concerns is what he described as the “undermining” of governance institutions, particularly the judiciary.
Prof Adei expressed deep unease about recent developments involving the highest echelons of the judicial system, which he believes pose a threat to national stability.
“What is happening at the judiciary is a very serious matter,” he warned. “In fact, I talked about it in January, and I knew they were going to do it.”
He pointed to actions allegedly taken by President Mahama’s administration, including the sudden appointment of seven Supreme Court justices, efforts to remove the sitting Chief Justice, and the reported installation of a new Chief Justice seen as aligned with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Prof Adei noted that such moves risk politicising the judiciary, which he believes should remain impartial and independent.
“If you undermine the judiciary, all of us will pay a very heavy price,” he said.
Drawing parallels to nations where civil conflict has erupted due to public distrust in legal systems, he said, “In most countries, people lose confidence in the judicial system before conflict begins,” he added, urging restraint and a commitment to preserving the rule of law.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama is expected to deliver a national address today, Wednesday, May 7, 2025, providing a comprehensive update on the achievements under his 120-day social contract with the people of Ghana.
