Tension erupts at LaDMA over MCE nominee rejection

-

There was heightened tension at the La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) after Assembly members rejected President John Mahama’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

During the confirmation vote for Alfredos Nii Anyetei, only 5 members voted “Yes”, while 9 voted “No”, leading to his disapproval.

The outcome sparked protests among supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who openly expressed their dissatisfaction with the nomination.

Many supporters chanted revolutionary songs and claimed that the nominee was too young and inexperienced to lead the municipality. Their demonstrations disrupted proceedings, making it difficult for officials to address the gathering.

Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, who represented the president at the confirmation ceremony, acknowledged the tense atmosphere.

“We have noted the concerns raised, and as a government, we will work to resolve the issues,” she assured.

Sources say the Regional Coordinating Council had intended to oversee a smooth confirmation process, but divisions within the party over the nominee’s age and perceived inexperience contributed to the outcome.

The rejection leaves the position of MCE for La Dadekotopon vacant as the government considers its next steps.

“We will not accept a leader imposed on us without proper consultation,” one protesting supporter told the media.
