Lord of the midfield: Afrifa stars for Satellites in Senegal victory

-

Ghanaian youngster Lord Afrifa delivered a standout performance as the Black Satellites claimed their first victory at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations with a crucial win over defending champions Senegal.

Making his second appearance in the tournament, the 18-year-old midfielder looked anything but inexperienced.

Afrifa’s composed presence in the middle of the park, combined with his relentless tackling and ball-winning ability, made him one of Ghana’s key assets on the night.

Afrifa joined the B team of Austrian side Sturm Graz last summer, having risen from Ghanaian Division Two side Great Corinthians. Since then, his development has been rapid, and his performance against Senegal suggests he’s one to watch.

The mercurial playmaker boasts a rare blend of athleticism and technical skill. His dribbling allows him to glide through midfield traffic with ease, while his powerful strikes pack the kind of sting that makes goalkeepers uneasy.

Afrifa’s midfield partnership with Denis Marfo, a robust and composed figure, gave Ghana control in the centre of the pitch, helping them win most 50/50 duels and dominate aerial challenges.

His performance didn’t go unnoticed. “Baller,” posted international photographer Big Muello on X (formerly Twitter), in admiration of Afrifa’s display — echoing the sentiment of many Ghanaians who may have just fallen in love with a new star.

With the win, Ghana moves to second in Group C, level on four points with leaders DR Congo, who edge the table on goal difference. Senegal and the Central African Republic trail in third and fourth place, respectively.
