Media personality and entertainment pundit DJ Slim has taken a bold swipe at Bishop Dag Heward-Mills, the founder and presiding bishop of Lighthouse Chapel International, over recent comments the bishop made regarding payment for musicians in church.
In a sermon that has since gone viral, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills said:
“Watch out for people who do things for money.
In my church, I said I’m not going to pay people to play instruments because I play all the instruments. I play drums, piano, and guitar.”
But DJ Slim wasn’t impressed. Responding during a segment on his show, he criticized the bishop’s stance as problematic and questioned the ethics of expecting free labour in a church setting.
“If he knows how to play every instrument, then he should go ahead and play them all himself,” DJ Slim retorted.
“Even the Bible says a man should eat from his toil. So if he expects someone to render a service in his church but chooses not to pay them, that raises serious questions.”
He didn’t stop there. DJ Slim also touched on the long-debated topic of whether or not churches operate as businesses, especially given the way offerings and tithes are collected.
“Until when will we admit that the church is a business? Every single church is a business. At the end of every Sunday, money is collected. Whether you call it offering or not, it’s legal currency intended for trade,” he argued.
