Tensions are escalating within the Talensi branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as a group of aggrieved supporters have vehemently rejected the nomination of John Millim Naabwomya as District Chief Executive (DCE), citing his alleged ties with the rival New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Announced on Friday, April 11, Naabwomya’s nomination has sparked a wave of discontent among grassroots members, culminating in a suspected arson attack that razed the NDC’s constituency office in Tongo.
Although investigations are ongoing, many party faithful believe the incident is linked to the growing unrest over the nomination.
At a press conference held in Tongo on Sunday, April 13, the group’s spokesperson, Charles King Luu, urged President John Mahama to rescind the appointment immediately to preserve party unity and avert political backlash in the 2028 general elections.
“We cannot entrust our district’s leadership to someone whose loyalty to the NDC is in question. This appointment threatens the cohesion we’ve built and may cost us dearly at the polls,” King Luu declared.
The group further warned that ignoring their concerns could deepen divisions within the party and demoralize supporters at the grassroots level.
The presidency is yet to officially respond to the group’s demands. Meanwhile, party insiders fear the unfolding tensions could cast a shadow over the NDC’s organizational strength in the region ahead of the next election cycle.
