The people are choking to death

A former Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, has launched a stinging critique against Members of Parliament, accusing them of turning their backs on the very people they were elected to serve.

“Nobody is prepared to help anybody. Everybody is prepared to help themselves. And I know an Honourable Member is here, but let me say something,” Professor Akosa stated boldly, addressing an audience at the University of Education, Winneba, during a public lecture on Friday, April 11.

His comments drew attention to what he described as an alarming misuse of public funds in Parliament.

“Last Friday, Parliament gave each Member of Parliament GH¢200,000 for GETFund projects and an additional GH¢150,000 to monitor those projects.

There is nowhere in the world where you are given 75% of what you receive just to monitor a project. No, nowhere. Yet all the parliamentarians remained silent. They got the money; they got their ex-gratia; they got their car loans.”

With passion and concern, Professor Akosa called out the silence of lawmakers in the face of growing public hardship. He suggested that while citizens grapple with daily struggles, their representatives are focused on entitlements and allowances rather than national development.

“These are the people’s representatives, and meanwhile, the people are choking to death. So please, our representatives, look back. Think about us. Think about us, and let’s all work together to move this country forward,” he appealed.
