“I have not changed my position on the anti-LGBTQI Bill. I have laid the Private Member’s Bill before parliament. For the bill to have broader legitimacy and a higher chance of success, it should ideally come with government backing,” he stated.

Sam George also indicated he is now waiting on an invitation from the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee to take the next step in advancing the bill.

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed a nuanced stance on Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. While he has not opposed the bill outright, he has emphasized the importance of a government-led approach to such sensitive legislation.

In March 2025, Mahama stated that he preferred the anti-LGBTQ+ bill to be reintroduced by the government rather than by individual members of parliament, suggesting that this would lend the bill broader legitimacy and a higher chance of success .

Mahama has also highlighted the need for wider consultations and cautioned against external pressures influencing Ghana’s legislative processes.

He has called for multilateral institutions to avoid cultural imposition, advocating for a more inclusive dialogue that respects Ghanaian values while considering international perspectives .
