Hon. Abiire Awineyesma, the Assemblyman for Gambrongo in Ghana’s Bongo District, has denounced the alleged practice of bribery in the confirmation processes of District Chief Executives (DCEs).

He asserted, “Any assembly member who takes money to approve a DCE is simply an idiot,” emphasizing the detrimental impact of such actions on local governance and community trust.

This declaration comes in the wake of President John Dramani Mahama’s recent revocation of all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) appointments on January 8, 2025.

The President’s directive also included the dismissal of appointed assembly members, instructing Coordinating Directors to assume acting roles until new appointments are made .

The confirmation processes for DCEs in Ghana have been marred by allegations of bribery.

Notably, in 2018, Martin Obeng Adjei, a DCE nominee for Berekum West, admitted to paying GH¢2,000 to each of the 27 assembly members to secure his confirmation.

Despite this, he was unsuccessful and sought refunds from the assembly members .

Hon. Awineyesma’s remarks serve as a call to action for assembly members to uphold ethical standards and resist corrupt practices.

He emphasized that accepting bribes undermines the democratic process and erodes public confidence in local governance structures.

As the Bongo District prepares for the confirmation or rejection of Akaseke Joseph Abaa as DCE, Hon. Awineyesma’s candid admonition underscores the need for transparency and integrity in the selection of local leaders.

His stance reflects a broader commitment to fostering accountable governance and ensuring that leadership positions are filled based on merit and the genuine will of the people.
