Kodua disputes counterfeit claims, says seized gold and dollars are authentic

In a recent interview on the current affairs program Atumpan on AsaasePa 107.3, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, cast doubt on the government’s claim that the seized gold bars and foreign currencies, including US dollars, were counterfeit.

According to Kodua, the government’s narrative, particularly their claim of counterfeit currencies, does not align with the findings from the ongoing investigation.

“The gold bars and the dollars are not fake,” Kodua asserted. “They thought the warehouse belonged to an NPP member, but their investigations proved otherwise—that it belonged to an NDC member, and they know. That’s why they’re saying the currencies are fake.”

Kodua also pointed out a crucial detail from the investigation, saying that the currencies found in the warehouse were contained in Bank of Ghana boxes.

He continued, “These are currencies contained in Bank of Ghana boxes, which they admit. If so, how can we say that the contents are also fake?”

The operation, which came to light in February 2025, was uncovered in an abandoned building where a battery-charging shop had been operating as a front.

Law enforcement officials seized ten 40-foot containers filled with forged Ghanaian cedis, US dollar notes, and gold-plated metals.

Investigators believe that two additional containers linked to the operation were moved shortly before the raid, suggesting that the operation was well-planned and ongoing.

One central figure in the ongoing investigation is a man known only as “Alhaji.”

According to Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, evidence connects Alhaji to the Sapeiman crime scene and suggests that he is a key player in a broader network of financial crimes.

“Alhaji is a central figure in this syndicate, and efforts are underway to bring him to justice,” said Kodua.

The raid and the findings have raised more questions about the depth of the operation and the identities of those behind it.

The involvement of high-profile individuals in this alleged financial scheme continues to spark public and political debates across Ghana, with many, including Kodua, demanding clarity and transparency in the investigation.
