U/E: Alagumgube secures DRIP equipment to expand airport runway

Alagumgube, a dedicated development advocacy group in the Upper East Region, has been granted access to the District Road Improvement Program (DRIP) equipment to expand the runway of the planned regional airport.

The approval, facilitated by the Upper East Regional Minister, underscores the government’s recognition of Alagumgube’s contributions to regional development.

The equipment will be utilized to extend the airport’s runway by an additional 600 meters, a requirement set by officials of the Ghana Airports Company to meet the necessary 2,000-meter length for safe operations.

Currently, the expansion effort has stretched the runway to 1,400 meters, with the new extension set to bring it to the required standard.

The DRIP initiative, now rebranded as the Regional Emergency Mobile Maintenance Unit, will play a critical role in executing this next phase of development.

During a site visit, Ghana Airports Company officials emphasized the necessity of the extension, noting that meeting the required runway length is crucial for the success of the project.

The intervention aligns with broader efforts to enhance regional connectivity and boost economic opportunities in the Upper East Region.

Gabriel Agambila Akakiire, founder of Alagumgube, expressed appreciation for the support from regional authorities and stakeholders.

He called on residents and well-meaning individuals to contribute towards realizing the airport project.

“The region is fully behind us. The Regional Minister has shown immense support and is currently in Accra to further facilitate necessary processes. We are grateful to the Ghana Airports Company for recognizing our efforts. The CEO of the Airports Company is expected to visit in the coming weeks, and we are hopeful that by then, significant progress will have been made,” Agambila told the media

The expansion of the airport runway is seen as a critical step toward improving air transport accessibility in the Upper East Region, fostering economic growth, and positioning the region as a key player in Ghana’s aviation sector.

With continued support from stakeholders, the project is expected to gain further momentum in the coming weeks.
