Parliament approves GH₵65.9M for Sports Ministry

Parliament has approved a budget of GH₵65,899,456 for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for the 2025 fiscal year, sparking renewed debate over the sustainability of Ghana’s sports infrastructure.

While the allocation is expected to support various programs under the Ministry, concerns have emerged over the absence of a dedicated fund for maintaining the country’s aging sports facilities.

The Ministry has announced plans to renovate the Accra Sports Stadium after Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad. However, some lawmakers argue that periodic interventions are not a sustainable solution and have called for a structured funding mechanism to ensure regular maintenance.

“The lack of a long-term infrastructure plan means our stadiums will continue to deteriorate, forcing us to spend huge sums on renovations instead of preventive maintenance,” one MP noted during the debate.

Despite the budget’s approval, the discussion highlights broader concerns about the government’s commitment to the long-term development of sports in Ghana.

Many believe that without a consistent infrastructure fund, the nation’s sporting facilities will remain vulnerable to neglect.
