Mahama’s tax reforms are political gimmicks – Afenyo-Markin fires at NDC

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has slammed the Mahama administration’s tax reforms, calling them politically motivated and ineffective in easing the financial burden on Ghanaians.

Addressing Parliament on Tuesday, Afenyo-Markin argued that the reforms were crafted to create a deceptive sense of relief while, in reality, placing greater pressure on businesses and individuals.

“The NDC government’s tax reforms are purely political, giving with one hand while taking even more with the other, providing no real relief to the private sector or the ordinary Ghanaian,” he stated.

His remarks come amid heated debates on the 2025 Budget Statement, which Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson insists is people-centered and designed to tackle pressing economic concerns.

Dr. Forson, defending the budget, maintained that the government remains committed to its proper execution.

“This budget reflects our determination to put the people first, and we will ensure its successful execution for the benefit of all Ghanaians,” he said.

He further emphasized that the budget was not just a set of numbers but a strategic blueprint aimed at solving real challenges.
