Accra court remands 62-year-old businesswoman for alleged $13,000 fraud

The Adabraka District Court in Accra has remanded Nana Ama Nwurueze, a 62-year-old self-proclaimed businesswoman, for allegedly defrauding another businesswoman of $13,000 under false pretenses.

Nwurueze purportedly posed as a wealthy entrepreneur with substantial properties, including Ohemaa Plaza at East Legon, fishing vessels in Takoradi, and a house at Airport, to deceive the complainant into parting with the money.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Apewa Achana, charged Nwurueze with one count of defrauding by false pretenses.

She was arrested following a bench warrant issued by the court in December 2024, after multiple attempts to apprehend her proved unsuccessful.

Investigations revealed that the case was first reported at the Airport Police Station in 2021, but Nwurueze evaded arrest until March 2024.

After her initial arrest, she was granted police inquiry bail but failed to report for further investigations, leading to her being considered a flight risk.

Nwurueze appeared before Her Worship Abena Asoh Owusu-Omenyo and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Her counsel, George Asamani, applied for bail, citing her ill health and assuring the court of her commitment to attend trial.

However, Chief Inspector Achana opposed the bail application, highlighting her history of evading justice. The court denied the bail application and ordered her remand.

This incident underscores a concerning trend of fraudulent activities in Accra.

In a similar case, the Adabraka District Court issued a bench warrant for the arrest of another self-styled businesswoman suspected of defrauding multiple victims under various false pretenses in the capital.

The court acted after several unsuccessful attempts by the prosecution to arrest and arraign the suspect.
