The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has raised concerns over the alarming rate of water losses in its distribution system, revealing that only 48 percent of the water it produces reaches consumers.
At a forum in Accra, the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GWL, Adam Mutawakilu, disclosed that the remaining 52 percent is lost due to pipeline leakages, illegal connections, and inefficiencies in the distribution network.
“As of the end of December 2024, non-revenue water was 52 percent. This means that more than half of the water we treat and distribute does not generate revenue because it never reaches the consumer,” Mr. Mutawakilu stated.
The high rate of water loss not only results in financial setbacks for the company but also contributes to water shortages in many communities.
The CEO stressed the need for urgent measures to address the situation, including infrastructure upgrades, stricter monitoring, and public cooperation in curbing illegal connections.
With increasing demand for potable water across the country, GWL is calling for collective efforts to minimize water losses and improve efficiency in distribution.
