Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has cautioned the government against using state security to suppress political opponents, calling for an end to what he describes as undemocratic tactics.

His remarks follow the recent arrest of activist and broadcaster Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah after he completed an examination at GIMPA on March 19, 2025.

In a tweet, Afenyo-Markin condemned the development, stressing that such actions threaten Ghana’s democracy. “It started with Abronye. Now it’s Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah. The NDC Government must be tolerant! Using State Security to intimidate opponents is not good for our democracy! Okatakyie Afrifa Mensah must be released now,” he wrote.

The Minority Leader also referenced the earlier invitation of Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, as another example of state security being used to target dissenting voices.

His comments add to growing concerns about political freedom and the perceived misuse of state institutions ahead of the 2024 elections.
