“I stand by my decision” – Adwoa Safo on E-levy abstention

Former Dome Kwabenya MP, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has emphatically stated that she has no regrets about abstaining from the 2022 vote on the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy).

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Tuesday, March 18, the former Gender Minister defended her stance, saying she prioritized the concerns of her constituents over party loyalty.

“I made that principled decision,” she said, adding that consultations with her constituents, especially church members, convinced her the levy would impose undue hardship on Ghanaians.

Adwoa Safo admitted she was caught between her allegiance to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and her duty to the people she represented but ultimately chose to stand by her beliefs.

She urged Parliament to embrace more independent-minded voting, arguing that prioritizing citizens’ interests over party directives would strengthen democracy.

Reflecting on the impact of the E-Levy, she noted that its passage had affected the NPP’s fortunes in the recent general elections but maintained that her choice was the right one.

Amid past speculations of impersonation during the E-Levy debate, Adwoa Safo dismissed such claims, affirming, “I was present in the House.”
