The Coalition of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Groups in the Nanton Constituency has locked up the party’s office in protest against the suspension of 34 party executives and members.
The suspended members, including polling station executives, electoral area coordinators, and constituency executives, were accused of misconduct during the 2024 general election.
Their suspension was unanimously adopted on January 23, 2025, after a meeting of the Council of Elders, Council of Patrons, and Constituency Executives.
However, the protesting youth argue that the decision is unfair and detrimental to party unity.
Addressing the media, convener Ibrahim Abdul Fatawu stressed that rebuilding the party should be a priority, especially after losing both the presidential and parliamentary elections in the constituency.
“The party should focus on unity and strategizing for 2028 instead of sidelining dedicated members,” he stated.
The youth group has petitioned the regional and national party leadership to revoke the suspensions immediately.
They also criticized the disciplinary process, claiming the affected members were not given a fair hearing.
“If this decision stands, it will discourage loyal members from committing their time and resources to the party,” the group warned.
