Brace for price hikes on food and utilities — NPP’s Chairman Coka warns Ghanaians

Ghanaians should prepare for an increase in utility and food prices following the government’s decision to scrap certain taxes, Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has warned.

Chairman Coka, as he is popularly known, suggested that the removal of the betting tax, E-levy, and other levies would lead to revenue shortfalls, which could be compensated through hikes in essential services.

In a Facebook post, he cautioned citizens about the looming financial strain.

“There is a film titled ‘I Told You So.’ Yes, the betting tax and E-levy have been abolished by President Mahama’s government, but gas, water, and electricity will go up. Food prices and other items are likely to increase too. Time will tell.”

His comments come after Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, while presenting the 2025 budget, announced the removal of what he termed “nuisance taxes.”

The government, he assured, would maintain fiscal discipline to ensure that national revenue is effectively managed.

Despite the minister’s assurances, Chairman Coka’s warning signals potential economic challenges ahead, raising concerns about the impact on the cost of living for ordinary Ghanaians.
