In response to the worsening flood crisis in Accra, President John Dramani Mahama has set up a special Anti-Flood Taskforce to tackle the persistent problem and minimize its devastating effects.
The newly established task force, chaired by Deputy Chief of Staff Stan Dogbe, has been tasked with implementing stricter flood control measures, improving drainage systems, and ensuring swift interventions in flood-prone areas.
“The President, concerned about the persistent flooding not only in Accra but across the country, has set up a special task force to tackle the issue and minimize, if not entirely prevent, floods,” Dogbe announced.
As part of its initial operations, the task force conducted an aerial tour to assess key drainage channels in need of urgent attention.
The team includes Legal Counsel to the President Marietta Brew as secretary, alongside key government officials such as Water Resources Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim, National Security Coordinator DCOP Abdul Osman Razak, and NADMO Deputy Director General Teddy Addi.
To address the crisis, the Local Government Ministry, in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, will begin desilting major drains to improve water flow and prevent blockages.
The government has assured Ghanaians of swift action to mitigate future disasters.
This initiative comes in the wake of severe flooding that has led to loss of lives and property, sparking public outcry over the need for long-term solutions to Accra’s perennial flood problems.
