The Paramount Chief of the Sakote Traditional Area, Naaba Sigiri Bewong, has called for intensified action against illegal mining in the Tilli Forest Reserve, particularly along the Red Volta River.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Naaba Bewong expressed deep concern over the environmental damage caused by illegal mining, including deforestation and river pollution.
This call follows the recent arrest of 73 individuals, including foreign nationals and cattle herders, during an operation led by Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri.
The chief, who had previously warned authorities about illegal mining activities, commended the swift intervention but stressed the need for sustained efforts to safeguard the region’s natural resources.
Naaba Bewong highlighted the critical importance of the Tilli Forest, warning that unchecked mining could lead to severe consequences, including a potential water crisis.
He urged collective action to preserve Ghana’s environment for future generations, aligning his support with the government’s broader environmental initiatives.
“If we don’t act now, a time will come when we may have to import water into this country because all the rivers will be polluted,” he cautioned.
