The Densu River, a vital water source in Ghana, is under severe threat as illegal mining activities, known locally as galamsey, continue to devastate the nation’s water bodies.
Darly Bosu, Deputy National Director of A Rocha Ghana, has sounded the alarm over the deteriorating state of the river, criticizing the government’s inadequate response.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue, Bosu expressed concern about the lack of action from state agencies, particularly between the 2024 elections and President John Dramani Mahama’s swearing-in.
“We don’t see a commensurate action by the state agencies… It’s rather getting worse. The problem is big,” Bosu warned.
He called for sweeping reforms, including changes in regulatory processes and the replacement of key personnel, to effectively combat illegal mining.
“There needs to be an across-board reform… We need to reform the licensing regime,” he emphasized.
