Pupils of Saint Joseph Basic School at Dohinayili, Tamale, are sharing their learning space with drug users, sparking outrage among parents and teachers.
The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is calling for immediate support to address the situation.
According to PTA Chairman Salahudeen Abdallah, drug users frequent the school premises around 3 p.m., engaging in substance abuse, including marijuana and tramadol.
“It’s like a shift system—when pupils are in, they stay in the bushes; when school closes, they turn the place into a market for drugs,” he told GBC News.
Teachers recently discovered a pupil wrapping marijuana left behind by smokers.
The situation threatens students’ safety, mental health, and academic performance, prompting the PTA to appeal to the Northern Regional Security Council for intervention.
Residents of Dohinayili and community leaders have echoed the call for urgent action, emphasizing the need for law enforcement to restore order.
The Tamale Metropolis has struggled with rising drug abuse, with a recent BBC documentary highlighting tramadol addiction among local youth.
