Ibrahim Musah, Head of Strategy, Policy, and Campaigns at WaterAid Ghana, has urged the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to intensify efforts against illegal mining.
Describing illegal miners as “mass murderers,” Musah highlighted the severe environmental damage caused by their activities.
Speaking to Navrongo-based Mike FM during the presentation of research findings on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, in Bolgatanga, Musah stressed the toll of illegal mining on land, water bodies, and the environment.
“Ghana Water is struggling in most of its treatment plants to supply clean water,” he said.
The Climate Resilience and Vulnerability Assessment research, covering Bongo, Kassena-Nankana West, Kassena-Nankana Municipal, Nabdam, and Bawku West districts, revealed rising temperatures, flooding, prolonged droughts, and threats to water infrastructure.
Musah also praised President Mahama’s ministerial realignment, which introduced a Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, as a step towards prioritizing climate policies.
“The president’s move signals a strong commitment to addressing climate change effectively,” he concluded.
