Residents of Balungo and Namoo in the Bongo District are raising alarm over the poor state of culverts on their roads, which they describe as “death traps” endangering pedestrians, drivers, and motorists.
The neglected culverts have been a concern for several years, with repeated appeals to authorities going unanswered. The road, a key route for local businesses and travelers heading to Burkina Faso, remains in disrepair.
“The culverts are dangerous, especially for new users. We risk our lives daily just to earn a living,” a frequent road user told News Net GH.
Assembly Member for the Namoo Electoral Area, Daniel Ayeta, attributed the deterioration to heavy rainfall and the weight of trucks using the road. He expressed hope that the yet-to-be-appointed District Chief Executive (DCE) would prioritize the road, given its economic significance.
The road’s construction was promised by former President Akufo-Addo in 2018, with completion expected within a year. However, the project has been abandoned, leaving residents to navigate hazardous conditions.
With the rainy season approaching, locals are urging authorities to take swift action to prevent potential accidents.
