The Upper East Regional branch of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) says the ongoing conflict in Bawku is negatively impacting revenue collection for utility agencies in the area.
According to the commission, the instability has disrupted operations for the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO), affecting their ability to generate revenue.
The Bawku conflict, which began in November 2021 and resurged in October 2024, has led to significant loss of lives and property, with ongoing attacks making the area highly volatile.
Speaking to the media in Bolgatanga, Upper East Regional PURC Manager Seth Kponyo said the insecurity is hindering revenue mobilization efforts.
“Both Ghana Water Limited and NEDCO continue to provide services in and around Bawku, but due to the insecurity, our teams cannot move around to collect revenue. Many consumers only pay when service providers visit or threaten disconnection,” he explained.
He added that only a small number of customers pay voluntarily, making revenue collection a major challenge for utility providers in the conflict zone.
