The Upper East Regional Hospital urgently needs blood to meet the demands of patients requiring transfusions.
The hospital requires approximately 14 pints daily, with a significant rise during peak seasons, particularly the rainy season when malaria and other illnesses surge.
Kingsley Gamor, Principal Laboratory Assistant at the Blood Unit, highlighted the issue in an interview, noting that while daily demand is substantial, it becomes more challenging to meet the need during times of increased illnesses.
He stated, “Even during the off-peak season, we still need 15 pints a day, but the rainy season, with higher blood usage, makes it even more difficult to replenish supplies.”
Mr. Gamor spoke to the media during a blood donation drive organized by MTN Ghana on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025, aimed at restocking the regional blood bank.
He praised MTN for its efforts, acknowledging the financial and logistical challenges involved, and encouraged other corporations to join in the cause.
“I urge other companies to help save lives, as MTN has done,” he said.
Martin Yaw Kumobah, Upper East Regional Team Lead of MTN Ghana, emphasized the company’s commitment to healthcare.
He explained, “Valentine’s Day is a time to show love, and the most meaningful gift is sharing blood to save a life.”
Since 2011, MTN Ghana has organized a nationwide blood donation drive every February 14.
This year’s event in the Upper East Region took place at Zamse Senior High School, Bolgatanga Senior High School, and Bolgatanga Technical Institute, with a target to collect 350 pints to replenish the hospital’s blood supply.
The initiative is part of the MTN Foundation’s focus on supporting health and well-being in the community.
