The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has directed the regional branch of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) to prepare detailed and holistic proposals documenting the tourism potential of the region.
This directive was issued during a courtesy visit by the Upper East Regional Director of the GTA, Wisdom Ahadzi, to the minister’s office.
Hon. Akamugri emphasized that such comprehensive proposals would provide investors with a clear overview of the region’s diverse tourism opportunities. He noted that focusing on a single site might limit investment prospects, whereas a broader approach would allow stakeholders to choose projects aligned with their interests.
“Some investors may be interested in the Tongo Rocks, others in the slave camps, and others in the Tongo shrines or other sites. If you focus on only one site, expecting sponsorship, it may not materialize. However, if you present a holistic package of proposals for various sites, investors can select what aligns with their interests,” he explained.
The minister also tasked the GTA team to explore the region’s hamlets and identify additional sites with tourism potential. He highlighted that developing these sites could create new revenue streams to support the region’s overall development.
“By developing these sites, we can open new avenues for generating resources to fund the region’s development,” he added.
Hon. Akamugri acknowledged the critical role of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in promoting tourism. He stressed the importance of collaboration between the GTA and MMDAs to identify and prioritize strategic tourism sites across the region. To this end, the minister pledged to facilitate stronger partnerships once Municipal and District Chief Executives are appointed.
Furthermore, the minister highlighted the potential impact of establishing an airport in the region, noting its interconnectedness with tourism growth. He expressed optimism that an airport would significantly boost tourism and contribute to the region’s economic development.
“To be able to raise money, tourism will be part of the basket where we would be able to raise money if the airport is established. I see it as a very serious aspect of our development agenda,” Hon. Akamugri stated.
