MPs seek wealth, not service – Lawyer Amoak Afoko

Lawyer Amoak Afoko, former Upper East Regional President of the Ghana Bar Association, has raised concerns about the state of Ghana’s democracy, arguing that many politicians seek parliamentary seats for financial gain rather than public service.

Speaking on the challenges facing Ghana’s governance with Bolgatanga based A1 radio, Afoko criticized the increasing commercialization of politics, where individuals view parliamentary positions as business opportunities rather than platforms for national development.

“People are rushing to Parliament not because they want to help others, but because they want to make money for themselves,” he stated.

Afoko stressed that for democracy to improve, young people must be properly educated and informed about governance.

He believes increased youth participation can challenge the current system and promote leadership based on service rather than personal enrichment.

His remarks come amid growing public debate on political integrity.
