The Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has held a meeting with Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak and Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga to assess the security situation in Bawku.
Following the meeting, Dr. Omane Boamah reaffirmed President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to resolving the conflict through traditional means, in line with a comprehensive roadmap.
In a statement titled “An Important Meeting Update on Bawku,” Dr. Boamah noted, “Today, I had the privilege of meeting with Interior Minister Hon. Muntaka Mubarak, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Majority Leader Hon. Mahama Ayariga, and other MPs at the Ministry of Defence. We reviewed the current security situation in Bawku. As President Mahama has assured, we will continue to follow the roadmap to restore peace and stability.”
Bawku has been experiencing escalating security concerns due to the ongoing conflict. Recently, President Mahama visited the area to engage with local stakeholders.
In response to the rising tensions, the Chief Justice ordered the closure of several courts in the Upper East Region on October 29, 2024.
A memorandum from the Judicial Secretary indicated that the closures affected the High Court and Circuit Court in Bolgatanga, as well as District Courts in Bolgatanga, Zuarungu, Zebilla, Garu, and Bongo.
The move was aimed at ensuring the safety of judges, court staff, lawyers, and the public.
Authorities continue to work towards a lasting resolution, prioritizing dialogue and traditional conflict resolution mechanisms.
