Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized the Majority in Parliament for their struggle to maintain consistent numbers during key government business, highlighting their past reliance on the Minority to approve ministerial nominees.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, he pointed out the irony of the Majority’s situation.
“I was in the lift with some members of their side, and they were rushing because their Chief Whip was forcing them into the chamber. For the first time, he is everywhere. Now he understands how difficult it is to conduct government business,” Afenyo-Markin remarked.
He dismissed claims that government business did not require strict party discipline, reminding the Majority of their past struggles in securing approvals.
“During the first batch of approvals, you didn’t even have the required numbers—you needed our support. The same happened with the second batch. On all four occasions, you relied on the mighty Minority to pass your ministers,” he stated.
Mocking the Majority’s self-proclaimed dominance, Afenyo-Markin pointed to the empty seats in the chamber.
“They call themselves the super Majority or super Minority, yet look at these empty seats. The so-called super Majority isn’t even up to fifty,” he quipped.
He urged the Speaker to rule on an outstanding application, stressing the need for the Majority to manage their members more effectively.
“This House must stand firm and rule on the application. It has not been withdrawn—rule on it, so they learn how to properly whip their members,” he added.
