Elias Ayinbila Apasiya, the Assembly Member for the Sumbrungu Azorebisi Electoral Area, has raised concerns over the low participation of assembly members in past elections for the Council of State in the Upper East Region.
He described the trend as discouraging and urged assembly members to take an active role in national leadership.
In an interview, Mr. Apasiya explained that since 1992, Council of State elections in the region have been dominated by a specific group, with no assembly member contesting for a national position.
“When I took office as an assembly member, I conducted some research on the election of Council of State members in the region. Historically, since 1992, these elections have been dominated by a specific group, with no assembly members contesting,” he stated.
He called on assembly members to step up and contribute to national development, emphasizing that their involvement in decision-making would positively impact their communities and the country at large.
“That is a wake-up call for us as assembly members. We deserve better, and I believe this is an opportunity for us to rise, work hard, and contribute to the development of this country,” he urged.
Mr. Apasiya also expressed strong support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s proposed 24-hour economy policy, describing it as a promising initiative.
While acknowledging that certain aspects might require refinement, he pledged his commitment to contributing ideas for its effective implementation.“
I think it is a very welcoming policy. If some aspects of the policy are implemented and do not work as expected, we will review them. Whatever contributions are needed to ensure they run effectively, I will be ready to provide,” he said.
Additionally, he emphasized the need for better conditions for assembly members, including allowances, stating that they have been neglected for too long.
“If given the mandate, I will re-echo the president’s decision to provide allowances to assembly members,” he stated.
Mr. Apasiya also highlighted his plans to work closely with the Upper East Regional Minister to advocate for major developmental projects, including the establishment of an airport in the region.
Meanwhile, he assured residents that the Upper East Region would not be left out of the benefits of the 24-hour economy, pledging to advocate for the region’s interests in national policy discussions.
