Upper East Minister under fire for spraying cash at welcome durbar

Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga has come under heavy criticism for spraying money during his welcome durbar in Bolgatanga.

His gesture, meant as a celebratory act, has instead sparked outrage, with many calling it irresponsible.

Atanga, who was recently sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama in Accra, received a grand welcome in the regional capital.

However, his act of tossing money into the crowd has been widely condemned, with critics arguing that such displays are unnecessary, especially in a region struggling with poverty.

Some residents and analysts say the minister should focus on addressing pressing development challenges rather than engaging in what they describe as a wasteful showmanship.

“The Upper East Region has serious economic and infrastructural issues. This is not the kind of leadership we expect,” a concerned resident remarked.

The controversy has reignited debates about responsible leadership and the culture of political fanfare, with calls for public officials to prioritize meaningful governance over extravagant displays.

Neither the minister nor his office has responded to the backlash.
