Captain Smart under fire for allegedly inciting youth to invade Obuasi AGA Mine

A viral video featuring television host Captain Smart has sparked outrage among Ghanaians, with many accusing him of inciting illegal miners to storm the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) mine in Obuasi.

In the video, Captain Smart, during his show on Accra-based Onua TV, urged the youth in Obuasi to rise against the mining company.

He said, “Go to the mine, attack it, and take what you want. AGA is destroying Obuasi, and the youth must act before it’s too late.”

He further criticized leadership for allowing such activities, claiming the mine’s operations harm the community.

Following these remarks, illegal miners reportedly invaded the AGA mine, leading to violent confrontations.

Seven people lost their lives when military personnel guarding the mine under “Operation Calm Life” opened fire in response to an alleged attack by the miners.

Others sustained injuries, while some managed to flee.

Renowned journalist Vim Lady, an associate of Captain Smart, has condemned his comments, describing them as reckless and dangerous.

The incident has prompted President Nana Akufo-Addo to order a thorough investigation. He has also directed AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical expenses of the injured and ensure a dignified burial for the deceased.

The controversy surrounding Captain Smart’s remarks has reignited discussions on illegal mining, youth unemployment, and corporate responsibility in Obuasi.
