Gender activist and NDC Communications Bureau member Shamima Muslim has praised President John Dramani Mahama for staying on course to fulfill his pledge of appointing 60 ministers.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, she highlighted the President’s commitment to forming a government that reflects Ghana’s diversity, with a focus on gender equality, youth inclusion, and experienced leadership.
Shamima noted that Mahama aims for at least 30% of ministerial positions to be occupied by women. Currently, women hold 28% of cabinet roles—a milestone she described as commendable.
“It’s not shabby at all,” she said, expressing optimism that the figure would rise with additional appointments in State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and other key agencies.
She reiterated Mahama’s vision of a representative government, quoting him: “I am determined to build the most representative government Ghana has ever had, one that includes women, youth, and experienced leaders who can drive change.”
Shamima emphasized that diversity, alongside competence, will drive Ghana’s progress, positioning the nation for greater success.
She also underscored Mahama’s commitment to accountability. Referring to the NDC manifesto, she noted plans to introduce a public conduct and standards policy to hold all appointees to the highest ethical standards.
She reminded Ghanaians of Mahama’s track record, citing instances during his previous tenure when officials faced legal action for misconduct.
On the ongoing vetting process, Shamima highlighted the President’s focus on competence and experience, noting that many appointees bring valuable expertise from government and opposition.
Shamima expressed confidence that once fully formed, Mahama’s cabinet would reflect his dedication to inclusivity, professionalism, and accountability.
