Haruna Iddrisu is a perfect fit for Education Ministry – Former Buem MP

Daniel Asiamah, a former Member of Parliament for Buem, has hailed the appointment of Haruna Iddrisu as the Minister of Education, describing it as an ideal choice.

Speaking on Starr FM’s Weekly Review with Naa Dedei Tettey, Mr. Asiamah, who worked alongside Mr. Iddrisu in Parliament, expressed confidence in his colleague’s ability to address the challenges within the education sector.

He noted that there seems to be a consensus across the political divide on Mr. Iddrisu’s competence.

“I’ve listened to voices from various political perspectives, and no one doubts his capability. Haruna is well-suited for this role,” he remarked.

Mr. Asiamah highlighted key challenges in the education sector, such as unpaid arrears to public schools, which he believes require a level-headed leader like Mr. Iddrisu to resolve through stakeholder engagement and dialogue.

“We need someone who can sit with teacher unions and academia to find solutions to our national problems,” he emphasized.

The former MP further described Ghana’s current situation as one of limited resources and poor management, requiring a consensus-driven leader at the helm of the Education Ministry.

Citing Mr. Iddrisu’s track record, Mr. Asiamah recalled his time as Minister of Labour and Employment, during which he successfully managed labor disputes and supported local pharmaceutical companies to produce anti-retroviral drugs.

Haruna Iddrisu’s appointment to lead the Ministry of Education has sparked discussions, as he was not initially seen as a likely candidate for the role.

However, his priorities are expected to include implementing the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s review of the Free Senior High School policy and addressing the financial burdens facing second-cycle schools.

Mr. Iddrisu is scheduled to appear before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting in the coming days.
