Veteran Nigerian actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has raised concerns about gender bias and exploitation in Nollywood during an appearance on the Honest Brunch podcast, as monitored by Newsnetgh.
Kanayo highlighted the perception that actresses receive more financial support from wealthy patrons compared to their male counterparts, creating an illusion that men in the industry are less hardworking.
“Rich Nigerian men often lavish support on actresses, making it seem like they work harder than their male counterparts. This imbalance gives the false impression that men in the industry aren’t doing enough,” he noted.
The actor also addressed the exploitation of aspiring actors, particularly women, by unethical producers.
He revealed that many women are pressured to provide expensive gifts or financial assistance, such as iPhones or rent payments, in exchange for roles. “It’s a cycle driven by desperation,” he said.
On tackling sexual harassment in the industry, Kanayo advocated for strict measures.
“It cannot be eradicated, but it can be curtailed through sanctions. If a producer is caught, they should face strict consequences,” he asserted.
Kanayo concluded by urging aspiring actors to focus on developing their skills instead of resorting to desperate measures for success.
