Collation of Ablekuma North election results resumes amid disputes

The collation of parliamentary election results for the Ablekuma North Constituency is set to resume today at 8:00 am at the old Electoral Commission (EC) head office in Ridge, Greater Accra.

The process, delayed multiple times due to disputes, faced a major setback on January 8 when Returning Officer Vincent Obeng resigned over disagreements concerning the verification of pink sheets.

Before his resignation, Mr. Obeng stated that results from four of the seven remaining polling stations had been finalised, leaving three unresolved due to disagreements between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Out of 281 polling stations in the constituency, results from 278 have been verified. However, the unresolved three polling stations are at the heart of the dispute. The NDC has demanded a rerun in 62 polling stations where discrepancies were flagged, while the NPP remains confident the collation will reflect the true outcome.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the EC’s Director of Training, described Mr. Obeng’s resignation as unfortunate and confirmed the suspension of the collation process. Efforts are being made to engage Mr. Obeng to reconsider his decision.

The Ablekuma North parliamentary seat is being contested by the NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriye and the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn.

With tensions high, today’s session is expected to bring clarity to the disputed results as both parties and the EC work toward a transparent resolution.
